Local Token Economy (LTE)
Local Token Economy (LTE) is a digital platform developed by ENEA within the Smart Energy Communities (SEC) framework to support sustainable energy behaviors and local value exchange.
The system uses a token-based mechanism to incentivize efficient energy use and community participation, enabling citizens to earn digital tokens through virtuous behaviors and exchange them within a local marketplace for goods and services.
LTE integrates energy data, behavioral incentives, and blockchain-based traceability to strengthen community engagement, improve self-consumption, and promote social and economic sustainability at local scale.
As part of the SEC ecosystem, LTE was positioned as:
- A modular, scalable digital tool supporting energy communities
- A neutral, institutional platform suitable for public administrations and EU projects
- A bridge between energy efficiency, social value, and local economies
